My wifes computer has two 128 meg ram cards , my computer has one 256 meg card . Is there any advantage in haveing two ram cards as opposed to one totaling the same amount of ram ?

Depends. If you're using a Pentium 4 or Athlon XP system, and your motherboard supports it (Intel 850 or later chipset for P4, VIA KT880 or later for Athlon XP), having two identical memory modules means it can use dual-channel mode, which allows data to be transferred twice as fast as single channel, resulting in a significant performance boost. If it's not a Pentium 4 and/or doesn't have dual-channel support on the motherboard, there will be no significant difference in performance.

smaller modules cycle faster if you are an insane gamer
otherwise go ahead and get 3x 1gig sticks and dont worry about the minimal loss

For the athlon XP line, the first dual channel chipset was the nForce, then the nForce2, the KT880 came in at a very late date for that platform and in my mind really isnt even worth mentioning.

I have a similar situation that i have a questions about so I won't start a new thread.
Do they have to be identical memory modules? I have a 256MB PC2100 and a 256MB PC2700. I know PC2700 will go down to be compatible, but will it do the dual-channel mode? It's for a compaq with a Athlon XP 2600+ or something like that

For Mac users, what are called "Matched Pairs" are recognized by the CPU as one big stick.
I believe it will work, but can somebody confirm, please?

im facing something similar except the company that made my laptop wont even tell what kind of memory to use pc2100 etc. all they say is to use the SODIMM. Im just going to get one and try it out. if it doesnt work then it goes back to the store ;)

do you have memory in it already? google for a program called cpu-z, in addition to telling you what cpu you have, it also tells stuff about the ram. if that doesn't work, crucial site also has ram IDing stuff.
this will only tell you what you are using right now.

Other than the newest Intel chipsets, the ram sticks must be the same size, and remember, it has to be one of these chipsets:
nForce
nForce 2 Ultra/spp
any socket 939 Athlon 64
Via KT880, PT880, P4M800, PT880
SiS 655FX, 661FX
Intel 865, 875, 915, 925, 945, 955 Series
ATI 9100IGP RS400
Thats not an absolute list, but those should support Dual channel. Older Intel Chipsets wont and non nForce 2 ultra on the athlon XP line wont.

2 rams eat twice as much as 1 ram. I don't know about sheep, but a ram eats about 3 kgs of hay per day. you have to calculate yourself how profitable it is to hold two animals like that in your house.
Maybe there's a black market for rams where you can get overstock or out-of-spec rams for cheap.
