I'm using Tiny Personal Firewall 4.0 right now. Not the best but closest to the old @Guard. Supports importing snort rulesets if you're into stateful packet inspection.
As for anti-virus, I'm using Symantec Anti-virus Corporate Edition 8.0. No bloody annoying interface, just clean and simple.

Are there any decent free anti-virus programs out there?

AntiVir maybe. But not AVG, that sucks all kinds of ass.

I use Zone Alarm plus the little firewall that runs inside my router. I've heard that Symantec Personal Firewall is very good, but I've never tried it.
I've never heard anything bad about AVG before, and have been recommending it to home lusers. How does it suck? What specifically does it do wrong?

AVG took up a much larger chunk of memory than I wanted, plus it puts an ad in your outgoing e-mails unless you uninstall.

Kerio personal firewall works well, without all the spastic panic that ZoneAlarm is prone to.

agnitum has a good firewall that makes a good second choice to ZA. http://www.agnitum.com/ as far as 'spastic panic' goes, agnitum has a "block most" mode where it only allows traffic from the programs it knows about and blocks the rest. You can get version 1 free for personal use (I don't know if it works ok with SP2 or not, though).
I never liked Norton's, myself. The ad-trashcan or wtfever that was always floating on the side annoyed the heck out of me, and I found it clunky to work with overall. Granted, I didn't give it much of a chance, either; but I still don't like it.
Ah. I've gone to using Web mail interfaces exclusively. I would not expect AVG to be able to add things to that.

I had sygate. It wasnt that bad.
But if you really want a great one... Get a P2 or P3 slot with a fanless heatsink and a IDE to CF adapter. Along with a 512 CF card. Throw IPCop or Smoothwall on that baby and you can have almost unlimited connections. Unlike shitty Linksys and shit.
