I'm thinking about getting some graphic novels. Which GNs do you guys think one should read? I like stuff that takes place in the real world, but has a twist in some way, be it an alternate history or a near future. Got any tips for a GN newcomer?

Riding Shotgun. The only one from Tokio Pop that doesn't suck.
Also, FLCL, bobobo bo bobo, Dragon Hunter, WJuliet, and Angel Sanctuary.
FLCL for random, puberty related humor. B for general randomness and nosehairs. DH is blah in many opinions, but can be great to others. WJ, a male actor tries to prove he is worthy of acting by crossdressing. AS has incest and a reincarnated fallen angel as central themes.
Riding Shotgun is for the Bounty Hunter and Assassin fans.

I hear the Death Note graphic novels are quite good. Although I have only seen the Anime, but if they are half as good it would be worth your while.
The story is more serious than the aforementioned novels (although I enjoyed FLCL), being in more of a murder mystery style. The show is quite dark, but interesting- I can only assume the novels are the same if not more so.

W.I.T.C.H. is an Americanized magical girls thing. It's fine and all, but easily forgetable.

Actually its made in Europe, Italy. They live in a European like city. I thorougly enjoy it. But prefer the magazine/comic and not just the graphic novel.

old news, but i just finished A History of Violence, pretty decent
Masamune Shirow's "Appleseed" is fairly good for a post-holocaustal, cybertechy, police-oriented graphic novel. He also did the "Ghost in the Shell" series, which is a bit further out there. Both are classifiably manga.
Also: "V For Vendetta". It's not manga and the comic was mcuh better than the movie, as usual.
You might also appreciate "The American", which is a story of a government-created, Captain America sort of character. It's black and white and sort of formula, but it's a great story nonetheless.

Yeah. Fuck deathnote. It was OK, but get's really fucking dumb at the end. Except for Misa. Misa is always OK. Except she's stupid. So. Fucking. Stupid. But hot.
I discommend Sandman and recommend From Hell. I don't normally like Alan Moore's crap at all, but if his comics are better than his movies, From Hell is probably decent, because the movie was meh, rather than awful like LXG and shit.
I can also recommend, a little bit, LXG if you like steampunk. Not the movie, but the comic. It's got its annoying points, like characters speaking in Hindi in Hindi characters without translation, but it's OK.
Also, from what I've heard DeathNote is good until A Certain Character dies, and then it turns crappy. So read the first part.
Man, no one's suggested The Watchmen? That's like a relic among comics; lots of really awesome art that once you start to read you really pay attention to because it's very detailed and relates to the plot/many subplots. Also, best villain ever. Hands down.
The Watchmen is freaking awesome. Try to read it before it gets massacred by the movie industry, which judging by this year's Comicon is going to happen soon.

I would suggest reading Watchmen as well, i just got finished reading it, it can be a hard read at times but its truly gripping when it gets to the final 3 chapters. I myself couldn't put it down after that point.
Other graphic novels that i would recommend are...
-Any of the sin city graphic novels
-Pride of Baghdad
-The brand new (just released yesterday) Captain America Omnibus put out by Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting (it will run you a pretty penny but it is so good, it also will allow you to get cuahgt up with the current Captain America storyline)
