I suggest that cartoons are more mainstream among adults in the U.S. than in Japan.
Cartoons like South Park, Family Guy, and The Simpsons have become a part of mainstream American popular culture. Most adult Americans know what these shows are, even if they don’t watch them themselves.
I don’t think any anime can make that claim in Japan. Anime series like NGE are no more mainstream in Japan than the animated Batman or Gargoyles television series are in the U.S. Those shows were watched primarily by "youths" in their home countries, and the adults who watch these shows were "fans". As for anime that is produced just for adults, those are mostly OAVs, and are just as obscure to the average Japanese citizen as anything the SciFi network airs is obscure to the average American. Just because something is made in Japan does mean its mainstream in Japan.
