American comics are pretty damn good.

I'm new to American comics, and I think some are very good. You just have to find the good ones.

Right now I'm reading the following,

Astro City: Dark Age - This is a comic about human perception of superheroes, it also explores the social and political change of 1970's in America.

The Surrogates - This comic is about a future where humans stay home and use robotic clones to work, socialize, etc. Story-wise it was probably inspired by anime in part, and maybe the sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. Very original artwork too.

Justice - I only read half of the first issue, and it seems too superhero-centered for my tastes, but the artwork by Alex Ross is absolutely fantastic. I have not seen such amazing artwork in any comic book of any country.

Swamp Thing - This is an old comic by Alan Moore, I'm reading paperbacks. It has some mainstream elements, like good guy fighting bad guy, but it's mostly a pessimistic look at humanity.

Now if only American animators started making true-to-the-source adaptations of such comic books,... but that will never happen.
