I have aged this thread.
The comics >>2 lists are all comics of which people say, "these are good comics! true comics!"
I hate all of them. But I don't know why or how to state it. They're better than superhero comics, but there's something stupid about them too.
For example: Kolchalka is too childish and repeats himself, Blankets is okay but Goodbye Chunky Rice is not subtle enough, Clowes' characters and stories are actually predictable.
The biggest bad thing is that rarely do any comics on this list use the techniques of film. They are way too wordy.
I'd like to know more about the opinions of >>4 and people like her/him.
protagonist hates everybody because they are shallow useless wastes of flesh
AND THEN:
events reveal that it is the protagonist, in fact, who is a shallow useless waste of flesh
Yes, every single metal gear comic is a tribute to the american way of life. i havent seen a single comic that surpasses it.

Define good. What is your idea of a good comic? I haven't read much of Transmetropolitan, so that's not descriptive enough. How do you feel about "heroes and villains", or gore?

jthm is always good...but looses its edge after you turn 14.
a good up and comming guy you might want to keep an eye on is corey "rey" lewis. he writes sharknife (among other things)

I hate to say it, but superhero comics are usually the best of the english speaking comics world because 90% of that world is doing superhero comics.

Most of the better non-jap comics are writen by Brits, try checking out the Vertigo line by DC comics, anything by Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, or Warren Ellis is usually pretty good.

Y: The Last Man By Brian Vaughn, Pia Guerra, & Jose Marzan
100 Bullets by Brian Azzarello & Eduardo Risso
Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore
Random Encounter by Nicc Balce
The Grimoire by Sebastian Caisse & Djief
Shanna, The She-Devil by Frank Cho
GLA: Misassembled by Dan Slott & Paul Pelletier
GunCandy by Doug Wanger & Brian Stelfreeze
Wake by Morvan & Buchet
The Authority: Kev by Garth Ennis & Glenn Fabry
For the most part, that's what I've read over the 12 months that I felt were good to me. Your best bet would be to goto the various comicbook publishers websites and see if they've got anything worth your time. A good bulk of them offer up samples of the titles they publish.
So you've only liked 9 issues in your entire life?

I guess it was good while it lasted for him.
I liked Battle Chasers, only the first three ones though... it was a bit pretentious while it was unclear if Mad could accomplish it or not.
I suggest you should give a chance to UK/European comics. Stuff from the 90s and 80s. Not Heavy Metal though. I don't know if that's available in the US, sorry...
