as per our discussion, below is what occurred:
I spent approximately 15 minutes discussing the lab and file input/output in java.
The lab discussion included me going over an additional step in required for the lab to help the students better understand the PrintWriter class in java.
Immediately after the lab discussion, (DIPSHIT #1) said he completed his assignment.
I was very suspicious because this was a new concept and the vast majority of students take at the very least 30 minutes to finish the lab.
Due to my suspicion I asked (DIPSHIT #1) to explain to me how his program works. He could not even explain basic declaring of variables or user input. Basically, the entire semester he has been simply copying off of another student.
This other student is (DIPSHIT #2). This week (DIPSHIT #2) saw me outside of the CS building and asked me if she could go to a different lab for personal reasons conflicting with todays lab. I said yes for this one time.
It appears (DIPSHIT #2) did the work herself, but I don't know for sure.
Back to (DIPSHIT #1) : Since he could not explain to me how his program worked, and he seemed extremely nervous, I asked him who his professor is. I then asked him if he would like to go with me to speak with them, or he wanted me to go speak to his professor alone. He opted to come with me. Hardly anyone was in the building so I sent a text to (#3 GUY IN THE DEPARTMENT) that I caught a student cheating. We ended up walking around looking for a professor for 10 minutes. The entire time we were looking for someone he was begging me not to get him in trouble.
As I walked around the 2nd floor with (DIPSHIT #1) I eventually stopped and said something along the lines of: "Listen, it took me about 15 minutes to write that program including comments/debugging/etc. and I can program better than any of you in there. You couldn't even explain how your program worked and you finished in 15 minutes? I don't think so. Expect a zero and maybe even getting kicked out of the course, and worse case scenario getting expelled from this university which means you can't go to any university in this state". I then waited for a response. (DIPSHIT #1) seemed very nervous since I'm sure he felt I was about to read him the Riot Act. He then explained how (DIPSHIT #2) helped him with the program. I then informed him that (DIPSHIT #2) was not in class today and then asked (DIPSHIT #1) if (DIPSHIT #2) mailed him the solutions. He confirmed that he received the document from (DIPSHIT #2) .
By this point in time (#3 GUY IN THE DEPARTMENT) had responded to my text and arrived to explain what should happen.
I ejected (DIPSHIT #1) from the class and told him he had a 0 for the assignment. I then asked him if he would prefer that I mail (DIPSHIT #2) or he mail (DIPSHIT #2) to inform her that she now has a 0 on the assignment. (DIPSHIT #1) said he would mail (DIPSHIT #2) and ran out of the room almost in tears.
Additionally, I have temporarily given them a -500 on blackboard so they might be surprised if they check their grades. I will fix this to a 0 when I have time.
IN MY HUMBLE OPINION:
these students, and any other students who are caught cheating, should have their "extension" privileges revoked. this of course is in addition to getting a 0 for the lab on that day. In other words, they need to finish the lab IN lab to get ANY points. Maybe I can make them sit next to me. Maybe I can make them wear a "dunce" cap. So many options.
