I think /b/ is a wonderful place to study sociology, it just isn't a book... and it is very culture specific...

I don't think you understand the sage function
It doesn't push a thread down, it just prevents your post from bumping it, and on a board as slow as this, it's basically doing jack shit
tl;dr kill yourself

Stripped by Bernadette Barton is kinda cool, it's all about women who work as strippers.
Barton doesn't press the issue of why girls start stripping, she looks at their interactions after they do and what sort of people get into it.

(Weird as it may be, I'm actually going to recommend books instead of arguing about crap...)
There are some really interesting books by the group Feminists Against Censorship, which are collections of articles about the place of feminism in todays society, especially in regards to things like pornography, prostitution. They explore ways in which one can be both feminist and pro-porn, pro-prostitution, things which mainstream feminism finds abhorrent. Particularly I'd recommend Alison Assiter and Avedon Carol. Their books are quite expensive even second hand as they weren't made in massive numbers but if you have access to a decent library system you should be able to get hold of them. "Bad Girls and Dirty Pictures - The Challenge to Reclaim Feminism" is the best I've read.
OP: Other than that - Sociology is a wide area. If you're interested in anything specific (education, disability, gender politics, 3rd world, LGBT etc) post back and I'll have a think.

I majored in sociology.
some interesting class books:
thinking through television - lembo
synthetic worlds - castronova
life on the screen - turkle
gaming - galloway
my local barnes and noble also has a great sociology section in the discounted books area. you should just go there and browse. i found "hating whitey" there but feared dirty looks from the white liberals at checkout. it's actually a good argument the author makes.
