How often do you look up words ?

Name: Anonymous 2010-07-23 13:25

Some look up everything they don't understand whilst others only do it if they cant understand what's going on. I find the former very tedious

Name: Anonymous 2010-07-23 18:33

Reading on a kindle lets me scroll to the word in question and display an excerpt of its definition. If I want to know more, I can read the entire entry in one of the kindle's 7 on-board dictionaries.

I never look up words

When reading in my native language I understand almost everything, I only look up when the word is somehow interesting or it has appeared more than once in a few pages and I don't know its exact meaning.

In English I only look it up if the word has been mentioned later and my interpretation somehow doesn't fit or it doesn't make sense.

I look words up all the time, and sometimes even write down a word I want to look up later if I don't want to do it on my cellphone, or my Internet is down or something.
::shrug:: I just can't stand not being sure what is meant by a given word.

I look up words when I'm not 101% sure of the correct definition/pronounciation.

It's rare that I won't know a words meaning, but on the off-chance I don't I immediately search for it.

Ah, the philosophy of a fourteen year old. Making everyone rely on Google will make the US more anti-intellectual than it is already. You'll understand that in about twelve years.

well, i am brazilian so i got some dificulty from time to time, but i only look up words if I don't grasp the meaning of the phrase.
i learned english alone, so i lack on some parts, like speaking, but generally, i get the meaning even thought i don't get some words.

This.

Name: Anonymous 2011-08-14 12:30

It's usually not that difficult to figure out what a word means in context in English, but I tend to look up words afterwards because I've assumed I understood the meaning of something contextually and then found that the literal meaning is different or nuanced. Like "belligerent," when I was younger: I assumed it implied drunkenness which it doesn't.

Name: Anonymous 2011-08-21 6:05

I'll look it up if it's integral to the understanding of the sentence or passage I'm reading, otherwise I'll leave denotation on the margin and come back through the book after finishing it, looking up the definitions of all the words I had to mark.

Don't change these.
