/book/ I'm looking for a collection of short stories. Not by any single author but a collection that highlights the important works of each author in the book. Something along the lines of The Oxford Collection of Short Stories (which I already own).

Well I dunno about different authors but I'd recommend:
Everythings Eventual by Stephen King
Nine Stories By Sallinger
I seem to dislike short stories though; you have to restart and force yourself to get interested in them. But I can see the appeal.

this is a bit off the original topic, but if you're into short stories i recommend Brief Interviews with Hideous Men by David Foster Wallace.
I've read this and it's pretty cool, though the stories are (of course) a little bit aged as the editor is already dead yadda yadda.
It has a bit of Joyce, Hemingway, Huxley etc....

If you're a student with some kind of online academic journal access you can get tremendous short stories from academic journals. Often these stories have little commercial potential so you can't buy them, but they still kick ass.
