CHARLES BUKOWSKI

He's my man.
I've never read any other authors who I've connected with so well.
Everything is perfect.

But ... I've read him all. All of him.
I don't know where to go next.

I've heard Fante and Celine are obvious next steps.
Who else?

Fante, Fante and Fante.

You will probably like Burroughs and the rest of the Beat generation in some way.

OP here.
Burroughs is okay..

The beats don't really do it for me.

Do you like Thompson? I know I am going to elicit groans from most of /book/ by mentioning his name, but despite his popularity among teenage boys he is actually a quite accomplished writer.

Why would anyone groan over Hunter S. Thompson? :-D

Because faggots think the only reason to like Thompson is if you are a teenage boy who likes drugs and violent behaviour.

And then there's the belief that if I mention Thompson, there's a good chance that I am a 14 year old boy who only like drugs and violent behaviour.

OP try some Paul Auster...start with The New York Trilogy

There is nothing wrong with liking drugs.

EXPERT DRUGS

I agree. I was just saying that 14 year olds tend to like things because they have "cool" things like drugs and violence and sex in them. When it comes to literature, I don't choose based on content like that. That is peripheral to my choice.

Bukowski is amazing. It isn't particularly well written, at least not in the classic sense, but the subject material is so real. There is a reality there that isn't really in a lot of other writings. Underneath the asshole narrator, you find a human ,like the soft part of a snail exposed after you crack the shell.

I'm glad to see people appreciate him.

Of course people "appreciate" him. Every hipster with an American Apparel hoodie will cite him and their "favorite author/poet" at the drop of a hat.

I've always found Baudelaire to be good companion reading material with Bukowski.

I may be alone on this.

Don't change these.
