Is there anywhere you can order used books without a credit card? I don't feel like getting off my ass and going to the bank.

Try freecycle. Also, there used to be a scheme where you'd just pass on your old books to someone else once you finished reading them.

It still happens, though it's pretty uncommon.
I can't remember how the organisation is called, but you're supposed to leave the book at a random place where people can pick it up (a statue somewhere in town, for example) so a random person can pick it up, read it and leave the book somewhere else.

Well, first of all, the books are usually pretty worn-out, so it's not like they care.
It's basically about 'trusting society'. Believe it or not, not everyone is an ass. Some people don't mind sharing/giving away their stuff for the enjoyment of others.
The whole point is about sharing books that had some sort of impact on you and you want that book to change someone else's life as well.

I just looked it up, in my country it's just called 'bookcrossing'.

but what if they take the book and just never get around to finishing it. then it will be sitting on their bookshelf forever never to be read by anyone again. sad story
