I would like to read some of Nikolai Gogol's work. Could anyone suggest a good starting point.
Russian/Easten European authors I have read before are Dostoevsky [5 novels], Solzhenitsyn [1 novel] and Nabokov [2 novels].

You should be fine to start anywhere, if you've read 5 Dostoevsky novels then you'll be fine.

Short stories. Then Dead Souls. Then whatever you want

Read the Overcoat, then The Nose. Then you'll be ready for Dead Souls (and by ready I mean, experienced enough to start reading a whole novel). You might want to read The Government Inspector (it's a play) at some point.
Don't read other stuff too soon, because he has a bunch of famous stuff that's actually not particularly well written, and public opinion rarely makes difference between those works and his true masterpieces.
