So I'm looking to get into mysteries, but don't really know anything about the genre.  So who are the good mystery authors?  Any recommendations for a newbie to the genre?

I'm not a big fan of mystery stories but why don't you start by reading some Sherlock Holmes? Who can help but love that eccentric with the morphine habit? Besides, Doyle is pretty seminal in the genre.

depends what you want.
Do you want a mystery in a locked room on a country estate? Then the 19th century English writers would be you choice.
Do you want hardboiled down to earth real life? Hammett, Chandler, etc would be the way to go.

Don't change these.
