Just drop it when you don't need it, if it fits the situation.

i.e.
"Went to down to the supermarket to day, saw some poor bastard all shot to hell behind the counter, so I went back to the dorm."

I write "I" fiction a lot, but don't overuse it. >>8 is write about just dropping it. When it's first person, it's best if it is not so formal anyway. It sounds better when the narrator is casually talking to the reader.
