Wheel of Time

I've never read any of these before. Recently I tried reading the 10th book, just to see if it might be worth getting all the other ones. I have 9 and 10. I made it about 75 pages into the book and decided I couldn't take any more. It was extremely bogged down is crap gossip and hundreds of secret rivalries between a bunch of extremely ninny "sisters" and their range of colours. It was like trying to read terrible LOTR fanfiction of a 65 year old women.

I can't even describe it correctly. Boring as hell is a good start I think.

So, is the entire series like this or did the author simply get worse and more convoluted with each new book until his death?

No one is going to like the Wheel of Time if they start with the Crossroads of Twilight. Hell, I don't like it, and I'm fond of the series.

Check out your local library for the Eye of the World and the Great Hunt. I'd say you can bail if those won't grab you.
