Egyptian Mythology Books?

Name: Anonymous 2009-04-15 23:26

So I just recently finished reading Gilgamesh, which I've always wanted to read, and loved it. Although it was the Stephen Mitchell translation, I'm going to pick up the raw version later.

I was wondering if there were such things as Egyptian Mythology stories, something similar to like Beowulf, Gilgamesh, Illiad, Odyssey, or any kind. Tried looking some around but surprisingly there really isn't any that I could find. It's weird considering how much history it has, especially with gods.

But if not, any other mythology books recommended would be greatly appreciated.

The Book of the Dead is nothing like Gilgamesh or Homer. But I think it's the only real literature that we have from Ancient Egypt.

I wouldn't call the book of the dead "literature."  It's more like a really long scroll with some drawings of the underworld and proof that the person lived a good life.

I don't know much of Egyptian mythology. But check out the Mahabharata (from India). A great epic.

Ok cool, is there a specific translator I should pick or just pick up the latest?

Oh and thanks for the suggestion, I looked around at it and it's mostly used as a reference book if you're going into that field.

Not sure about the translator. I actually haven't read it in book format. Growing up in an Indian household, I read the comic serialization of it and the live action series.

But Ekanath Easwaran's translation of the Bhagavad Gita is the best one out there, if you decide to read only that.
