I read way too many books growing up to even take a stab at this question. But I did read Interstellar Pig, and >>6 was good too. Out of the Silent Planet was a favorite though.

I had a hard time finding books that interested me when I was between 11 and 16. 11 and under, I read the Redwall books by Brian Jacques. Over 16, I starting reading literary classics, especially Russian literature. I read LOTR during this period, but that's about it.

My favorite author in grade school was James Howe.  I had most of the Bunnicula books, along with Sebastian Barth.
