Stating your preferences would help you out more.
If you don't mind nonfiction/history, try Jared Diamond's Collapse. Easy to read, compelling, and you can pick it up in the middle without losing the book's narrative.

Chekhov's short stories or Dubliners by James Joyce is a good place to start
