I just finished reading Foundation by Isaac Asimov.
The setting, an empire decaying into dark ages, really captivated me. It had me wishing for more, because Asimov's choice of characters meant that the reader only got to experience very little of that atmosphere.
A book with a similar setting (not necessarily sci-fi), that deals with people facing the changes firsthand, would really hit the spot. Do you know any books like that?
