Almost the other way around: if you read the books first, you may not fully enjoy the games. You might at least want to play Myst first. The story in the games only really comes together after reading the books, but part of what's awesome about Myst 1 is that you're just like, "Hmm, a book, what could this bOHSHITWHEREAMI‽" Events in the books pertain to Riven as well, so you might enjoy it more "clean". The books don't give away things relevant to the puzzle solving, but just to the plot. When I read the book telling about the events in Riven, I was like, "Oh fuck, that's why Myst happened!"
Myst 3 has a fairly neat plot, but after that you'll probably be like, "Fuck you and your family Atrus, I hate you all and never want to see or hear about you again." That's all after the books anyway. I would recommend playing the first two before reading the books, although the other games are good (Myst 3) or at least mostly fun (Myst 4).
I enjoyed those books, although I did not come buckets. Maybe teaspoons.
