Long was never a problem; I am more interested in the characterization.

I hate Ayn Rand's idiot philosophy, but the book isn't too horrible. I wasn't a fan of the writing, really; I found it kind of bland and REALLY dehumanizing a lot of the time, which is about par for the course for Rand. The protagonist doesn't come off as individualistic so much as borderline sociopathic, to me, but that's just my judgment.

I've been reading it for a bit now, and so far I've been happy with it.

Still haven't finished Roark's 'arc', so to speak.
