I'm really picky when it comes to stories I like, and I was expecting Poe version 2.0 when I picked up Lovecraft, but his shit is bananas. He might be my favorite author.

Just read this and you'll get a pretty good understanding of what his writing is like:

Looks like a lot of his stories can be read online for free.

Arkham House publishes a fantastic three volume set of all his work. I recommend starting with The Dunwich Horror and Others, because it contains some of his best stories.

What >>2 said, except he didn't mention Lovecraft is a terrible, terrible prosaic. Sick things he used to imagine were oftentimes pretty cool - cool enough to be relevant even today - but he himself was devoid of any literary talent. Lovecraft was no writer at all and his prose is horrid throughout.

I've read only Dagon so far, but I liked it and will read at least a few other short stories too.

The short story "The Colour out of Space" is probably one of his finest. I also enjoyed the "The Call of Cthulhu", traditionally seen as his best work.

Don't change these.
