Books with epic battles?

I'm particularly looking for something with some kind of stalemate until somebody comes along and just starts fucking shit up.  Fantasies are preferred, for obvious reasons.

Olympos, 2nd book of a duology by Dan Simmons, where the final battle is a fight between Zeus and Archilles. Total epicness.

Have a look at David Gemmell's stuff, some fucking great battles in there - great heroic fantasy in general, actually. Legend even somehow fits your "stalemate" request.

Also, Erikson, if he works for you (what with the 9039048 characters and ultra fucking high magic setting). The Chain of Dogs part in Deadhouse Gates was pretty epic, just for one example.
