The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss was fucking great, even though it basically is one huge cliché. It just _worked_, and I loved the style.
Though it is the first of a trilogy and the only one out, yet.
Also try Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series... and if you don't mind some sci-fi, get the Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold and maybe have a look at E.E. Knights Vampire Earth (although the coming of age part of these doesn't take that long).
Ah, shit, nearly forgot about these: Jim Butcher's high fantasy series "Codex Alera" is good & fits your bill, too.

Yeah, I like Dresden Files too .. urban fantasy in general, even. Though it often does tend to have wayyy too much romance in it, there are good exceptions to this. CBA to make a list now though, maybe tomorrow, if you want moar.

Insignificant speck becomes something more:
David Eddings Belgariad
Raymond E Feist Magician
JV Jones Book of Words
Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow and Thorn
Guy finds path in life:
RA Salvatore Dark Elf
Robin Hobb Farseer (kind of)
Other:
Glen Cook Swordbearer, farmboy learns that life can be pretty shitty too
RA MacAvoy Damiano & Damiano's Lute (this one is a bit iffy though)

Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson.
The last short story is the definitive coming of age story, but read the rest of the book if you have time first, since the last story kind of brings everything together.
