Cyberpunk Recommendations

I've been in the mood for some cyberpunk reading lately, but I'm pretty new to the genre and don't know where to start. I've only read Snow Crash up till now and I thought it was good but could have been better without all the history stuff he worked in. What are some of the required books for cyberpunk fans?

If you don't like history, Stephenson is probably not the author for you.

So Stephenson's books are all pretty tied with history then? What about Neuromancer? I've been hearing about it from another forum and from the description on Amazon it sounds pretty good.

Yeah, Neuromancer is pretty much THE cyberpunk novel. Definitely read it.

Spoiler: Wintermute dies

Sort of.

actually, I never really understood how loa came in, I mean as I understand, wintermute fused with neuromancer, both ceased to exists but the resulting entity had its own personality (what wintermute wanted) and it kind of became the sentience of the hyperspace, and then, some time between neuromancer and count zero, maybe a milisecond after the fusion, it split apart and the loa were born... am I right? what do you guys believe hapened?

This, although I kind of didn't like it (Pattern Recognition is awesome though. Too bad it's not cyberpunk).

So Ghost in the Shell took plenty of inspiration from the book it seems.

Lots of stuff in early Gibson seems *really* clunky now.  If you can get "mirrorshades" secondhand anywhere it's worth a read.  If you can get any old Interzone anthologies they'll have plenty of cyberpunk in.  (Don't actually pay too much for mirrorshades or interzone though)  I like stephenson, but the later books are not my favourite.  Bruce Stirling often has good ideas, some of his books are cyberpunk.

then you get stuff that isn't really cyberpunk, but has a lot of the influences.  Lots of richard Morgan's books come to mind.  Tricia Sullivan's 'maul' made me think of cyberpunk, but I'm not sure why, and I didn't really enjoy it that much.

Don't change these.
