Artemis Fowl series?

They're sort of kiddy books, but each one (I think there's four out now?) has held my attention indefinitely.  I just love Eoin Colfer's writing style and the characters and plots and everything.
So yeah anyone read this book?  Liked it?  Not liked it?

(Oh yeah and if anyone could recommend me good fantasy books that aren't overly creepy or cheesy, that would be awesome.)

i read them.....i agree, they're very well written

the first book is called "the alchemyst"

The first book contained a few eye-rolling moments. As the books wore on they got better.

I lost interest in the middle of the fifth book though. Despite the eye-rollers, I feel the first book was the best, simply because Fowl was more interesting as a crazy brat playing with bombs and playing the evil genius against heavy odds.

Nice kid who always has a technical trick up his sleeve? Count me out. It smacks too much of deux ex machina.

These all look too much like Potter clones to me.  I'd try some pre potter stuff thats proven to be good like Narnia and His Dark Materials.

Narnia is also a great series, some books are a bit slow, but i found the series as a whole to be a great read

The Artemis Fowl books aren't very Potterish at all, actually. They are a little young, but still entertaining. Wikipedia says there's a movie and a sixth book coming in '08.

As far as other fantasy goes: I like Diana Wynne Jones (Chrestomanci series, Howl's Moving Castle), Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Orson Scott Card... I don't know how much you've read, but wandering around the fantasy section of the biggest library you can get to is usually fun. Same with bookstores. Browse! The first twenty pages should give you a good idea of whether you'll like it or not.

Diana Wynne Jones really is in a category by herself when it comes to children's fantasy.

I find it really weird classifying what she writes as children's literature. There's no doubt that's the intended audience, but even as an adult I was thoroughly entertained. Eoin Colfer could learn a lot from her.

I tried reading the Artemis Fowl series, but it was a bit too young for me. I'm a big fan of good children's fiction, but it just couldn't keep my attention. I highly recommend Clare B. Dunkle's books if you'd like some good young fiction that doesn't feel like it's just for kids--plus it's darker.

I liked the Fowl series all the way until The Lost Colony - that was just crap, for some reason. Maybe it's because the characters all seemed like they had personality transplants, or maybe it was because Colfer tried to have too many things going on at once. Whatever the reason, Lost Colony just didn't get me like the rest of the Fowl series.

I like the AF series overall, but Lost Colony (and to an extent, Opal Deception) were too fanfictiony for my tastes. Eternity Code was the best, I think.

Minerva must die, pleaseandthankyou.

Don't change these.
