It's driving me crazy

I'm looking for an old children's book my school library used to have. It was pretty surreal, about a boy who falls through a puddle and lands as an indentured servant to a wizard?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you don't mind spending 2 dollars Loganberry books has a service of figuring out books you read as a kid but forgot the name etc of. They have a pretty good success rate.
here is the link

It wasn't the first Narnia book, was it? That had something about puddles in it.

Yes it was, this kid and some girl go to a magical land where there are a bunch of puddles and for each one you go into you go into another world or some shit. I remember reading it a while back.

That's The Magician's Nephew, the first in the Narnia series chronologically.

What did the kid have to do as an indenture?  Did it involve magic rings?  If yes, it's probably >>5.

If you have a Livejournal there's a group on there called whatwasthatbook which, well, will find you that book.  They have a really high success rate.

If that's the one where he falls into a puddle, has awesome adventures, and then falls into the sea and then falls OUT of the puddle and realises that all his awesome adventures were some sort of daydream crap and that the hot chick he was going to bone is out of his reach forever, I READ THAT BOOK AND DAMN IT I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS EITHER BUT IT WAS AWESOME.

Don't change these.
