I think I want to become a writer.

Only, I only get that feeling when it gets late at night, usually around this time (1 or so in the morning). I don't know what I want to write about, but I imagine it's something depressing or not all that cheerful.

I don't really know where to get my muse from, however. I've tried writing stories before, and I had an epic one started, but I lost one of my printed copies, and the only other is floating around western New York somewhere, so all hope of continuing that story is lost.

So, /lit/, if there are any writers out there, how do YOU get motivation to write?

Mostly, I evade it by not planning out anything, and not rewriting anything until the story's done.

I tend to start writing short stories without a single clue what the story's going to be about, just a first line to start with and maybe a mental image of a single scene. Then I just let it roll out without trying to guide it too much.

And I have to make sure I don't rewrite, because if I start, I stop making progress, because I'll reread what I've got, fiddle with it, then sigh with satisfaction at a job well done and close Word without a single new line that furthers the story.

My problem is sticking to one story. I've got like four of them in the forge right now, and I work sporadically on all of them.
