Out of curiousity, what is it that makes this series so good?

Incest, rape, lolis, lolirape. Castles. Knights. Swords. Dorne. Ser Gregor Clegane. Syrio Forel. Red Wedding. A backstory that's implied, but never actually confirmed in the book, thus making it a legend which the reader must piece together.
Lolirape.

Fantasy universe lolis are just too hot not to rape.
But it's a deeply character driven gritty fantasy/medieval based setting, without being fucking gaudy like Forgotten Realms shit. And the mass production covers are some what discreet, even if the titles aren't.
Also, Mormonts are pretty bad-ass.

So then from what I've heard here and at various other places, it sounds kind of like Berserk. Is that so?

Like Berserk BEFORE the whole epic apocaliptic slaughter. As in the Band of the Hawk parts.

Who would win a rape contest? Ser Gregor Clegane or Pyramid Head?

I must say, after reading this series of books, everything else I have read pales in comparison, it has tainted me forever. I have yet to read another series since that meets my new found expectations. (Although, Scott Bakkar's "A Prince of Nothing" series is quite good, it still doesn't hold a candle to George's creation!)

If they make this series into a show on HBO, which is the pretty much the confirmed rumor, it will be one of the greatest shows ever made!! Mark my words /book/... mark my words!!

Literature is over. George Martin beat the final boss.
hah, i thougth that a song of ice and fire was teh best until i read the malazan books of the fallen by steven erikson. Quite simply he shits down the throat of George Martin. The first book didnt seem that good when i read it but by the second book you beging to see it as the masterpiece that it is. after you read all of teh books that are out (there are 8 atm) you should reread it because the second time through the first book is awsome and the others are even better than they were the first time.

Not really comparable though .. what with ASOIAF being (very) low-magic and more character-focused and Malazan high-magic with focus more on the overall epic-scale conflict.
For me they were equally enjoyable, although that of course is as always a matter of opinion.
