I WANT BOOKS.

Name: Anonymous 2007-03-24 21:53 ID:rpOP1NUS

I'm bored, I'm depressed, I'm hungry, and I'm wasting my days away on the internet.  Give me literature, entertainment.

Things I've already read and love: Battle Royale, Song of Ice and Fire series, Hyperion/Endymion, anything by Neil Gaiman

Things I haven't read but will buy along with whatever you tell me to: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect, Jennifer Government, The Man in the High Castle

Jennifer Government was a fun read.

Let me add more along the lines of entertainment, although a few are good to think a bit too:
Charles Stross - The Atrocity Archives (it's got a sequel named The Jennifer Morgue, but I haven't read it yet)
Matthew Woodring Stover - Heroes Die + Blade of Tyshalle
Neal Asher - start with The Skinner - arguably (one of) his best. If you like that you'll probably like his other stuff too, namely Gridlinked + sequels.
Steven Erikson - Malazan Book of the Fallen series - if you haven't read it yet, get it, SRSLY!
Joe Abercrombie - The Blade Itself + sequels - last one of the trilogy not yet out, but the wait is not too long and it's certainly good.
Scott Lynch - The Lies of Locke Lamora - together with "Blade.." some of the best fantasy I read in the last few years, reads nicely fresh.
Steven Brust - Vlad Taltos series
David Gemmell - The Damned 1 + 2, White Wolf, Dark Moon + everything about Druss and Waylander in general.
Simon R Green - Nightside series, might be fun if you're into that urban fantasy stuff which Neil Gaiman suggests, although this is that and hardboiled PI shit mixed in - they do get a bit repetitive as you progress in the series though (for once not a female main character in this genre, zomg).
R Scott Bakker - Prince of Nothing series - while arguably as finely written as ASOIAF and Malazan, it didn't do much for me in the first book, little action, too much politicking, not very likable characters, but then there are people who adore it.
Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash, Zodiac, Diamond Age, don't know about the rest by him, but especially the first two are really, REALLY good and funny as hell.
Fritz Leiber - Fafhrd & Gray Mouser stuff
John Steakley - Armor (Vampire$ too, much better than the shitty movie based on it)
Lois McMaster Bujold - Vorkosigan series - it's space opera, mostly, but good nonetheless.
Karl Edward Wagner - all about Kane, GREAT or GREATEST fantasy villain ever?
John Scalzi - Old Man's War, possibly The Ghost Brigades + The Android's Dream
Richard Morgan - Takeshi Kovacs series, namely Altered Carbon + sequels.

Alright, maybe a bit too many suggestions, but I simply ATE these, so there. You probably want to google for some reviews etc though (duh) , they don't all fall into the genres laid down by your "already read & love" books.

Rock.  These suggestions should occupy me for a good year or so.

Measuring the World by Daniel Kehlmann.

I got this for Christmas and didn't think much about it. But once I started reading, I finished it in only two days (~300 pages). It's that awesome. It's made of science, adventures any much lulz.

I don't know if the English translation is as good as the original but it can't be that bad, so give it a try.

How about... the House of Lulz?

House of Leaves is definitely a must-read. Look it up on Wikipedia

Some fantasy you should check out:
R. Scott Bakker's The Prince of Nothing
Robert E. Howard's original Conan stuff
China Mieville's Perdido Street Station
Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast

Some Sci-Fi
The Essential Ellison - a massive collection of Harlan Ellison stuff. The utter fucking brill.

Don't change these.
