The Beach by Alexander Garland, a brit.  great book, shit film, and its very easy to understand.  my all time fav book

Both Dostoyevsky and Dostoevsky are acceptable transliterations.

Personally, I'm a sucker for British literature.  A Room with a View by E.M. Forster is one of my favorites, and it's relatively easy read.  Another quick read is the German novel Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.

Come to think of it, though, your assignment was already due, so I guess my post won't really be of any help...
