I've read them all. They are quite good.
Poor Marvin...

i know it's a classic but i just don't like that kind of humour. super intelligent mice who think they can convince their fellows that the answer is 42? cavemen that are visibly becoming extinct? i just couldn't swallow it. more lucid are his two novels about dirk gently, "dirk gently's holistic detective agency' and 'the long dark tea-time of the soul.' only a little more lucid.
Wait, let me test if cross-board linking works on the text boards too: >>>/lounge/1169462108
Anyway, I read Hitchhiker 1 three months ago, really liked it. Currently reading Restaurant and, while it's still very funny (especially Marvin, and the random anecdotes Douglas throws in), it's not as good as HHG 1. In HHG you felt that what they did had at least a miniscule amount of sense of purpose. But that's gone in HHG 2, it's just, like, too random.

Although the books are good, none are really as good as HHGG. So long, and thanks for all the fish is very unlike the rest of the books, but they're all good.
And Mostly Harmless is an Adams mindfuck.

They are all worth reading IMHO, but the first book has the most humor.

Yes, they are. But HHGG and Mostly Harmless are the best two.
In one or two of the interviews that's included in The Salmon of Doubt, he expressed regret over the way Mostly Harmless turned out and hinted that he might write a sixth Hitchhiker's Guide book to end it on a high note.
He also said that Salmon of Doubt might become that Hitchhiker's book, because a lot of the ideas he had for it he didn't feel fit with Dirk Gently.

I have "The Ultimate Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy", which has all five stories as well as "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe"
It's too bad that Douglas Adams died a couple years back. I wish I could meet him.
I have the Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide (which is the complete 'trilogy' as it says, of 5 books)
God I love Adams' dry wit.
Only read up to Mostly Harmless, though. For some reason, I just can't push myself to read it.
All I can say is:
Poor Marvin.

I am a hitchhiker and I found those books informative on americas expressways highway's and roads. And railways. Basic instrustions before leaving earth is also a good book too.

I'm on "So Long and Thanks for the Fish"
And also, Marvin is an emo kid who never shuts up. He doesn't deserve pity.

Hitchhiker's Guide is in my burnpile. So long and thanks for the shitty first paragraph.

You should really finish it off, there's something oddly satisfying about knowing the whole ending. I won't spoil it, but I think Marvin got off the easiest.

Those books are so hilarious. Love 'em.
The answer to the universe is 42. (:

Completed the series. Unhappy with what the author did with Fenchurch. Somewhat satisfied with the ending.

Frankly, I was very disapointed with the ending of the series. I actually suspect that he was just looking for some way to entirely and completely rule out any more sequels.

I think he said he ended it that way because he'd had a rough year and was bitter. Still loved it though.

the 4-book trilogy was amazing...but yeah the ending was a little to open *exept for the death of marvin :(*...but it was so funny yet it still made sense, like family guy sorta except without all the references to american culture and tv shows.
i rate it 10/10 :D

I feel it gets progressively depressing, climaxing at 5 as a throughly emo, while still awesome book.

Dated as fuck but still charming and occasionally funny. Has a lot of aspergers zealot type fans though. TV series was awful, movie was bland, dunno about radio series, but its supposed to be ok.

It relies WAY TOO FUCKING MUCH on the "LoL rAnDOm!1!1!!1! *holds up spork*" humor instead of actually being original, interesting, or intelligent.

Agree with this one! I was actually disappointed when I saw the movie. It looked very good, but they really washed the story down.
They TV-series might not've been too well made, but they followed the books.

Please don't

The final ending where everyone dies is fucking awful. Even Adams hated it, he didn't even want to write the book.

Excellent series.
His sense of wit and outlook on the meaning of life brought forth quite a few chuckles while I was going through his novels.
