Are the prequels really unreadable?

I loved the book, and have been meaning to continue with the series, but for the reason >>2 mention, have been very cautious.

So, does anyone know which books are actual sequels (dealing with the same characters, locations, and themes), and which are totally unrelated except for House names and the fact that they're sci-fi?

I'm a fan. There's shitloads of wisdom in every word written (Frank Herbert mind you) that gives countless insight to the things I hardly think about until now, most of which are government, society, and the effects of religion. I especially like his take on prescience and time.

Don't change these.
