So is Ulysses actually worth reading? The first few pages are boring as fuck. What about Finnegans Wake?

If you can't get through Ulysses, forget about Finnegans Wake. It's like a bad acid trip.

Ulysses is not worth reading, unless you like spouting random references that nobody except English majors have a chance of catching.
True story.

It's worth reading, but do it when you have time to read an entire section at once, or else you're not going to know what the hell is going on (not like that's easy to figure out in the first place.)
Don't try to read it in the lunchroom at work when your asshat cow orkers are watching Dr. Phil at full volume, for example. This is why I haven't finished the book yet.

It might be stylistically brilliant, but as far as books go: reading something because it is renowned is stupid.
There's nothing there to relate to, only words. Plenty of authors have done what Joyce has and have left it inside the reader, he just receives the credit.

I've yet only read snippets of it and to me it seems fun just for the wording alone. I can't help but think having a drunk friend read it out loud would be highly entertaining. I also have an audiobook of Finnegans Wake on my computer, acid indeed was involved with that whole project; large amounts of acid.

I've heard good things about both books. Mainly "Finnegan's Wake". I think. That's the one that's written to describe one specific day, correct?
However... >>5 = truth.
So far as I can tell, the best way to learn about great books is to get a good recommendation on a book and check out other titles by that author.

No, Ulysses, was written about one day. Finnegan's Wake is pretty incoherent since Joyce used various languages to construct new words, thus making the book very unreadable to most folks. I am halfway through Ulysses. I like its style but it is dense at times.

OP here. i've got thru a few chapters, and it's okay. it's a cool idea, and it's fun to read for a bit, but if nothing exciting happens and the whole book just goes on without any greater action than describing how bloom takes a shit (no kidding), then i can see it being far too boring to finish. seems like one of those books you should read, just to see how the writer approached their goal, but once you appreciate that, it seems like it might be worthless
