Crappy books by respected authors

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-08 21:34

There are books by popular or well known authors that are crap.  What are they?

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-08 21:53

Obligatory Da Vinci Code.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-08 22:18

Respected and popular are two different aspects. A crappy book by a well known author is definately the Da Vinci Code.

I've always felt that any truly good author couldn't write poorly.

Of course, I only read the classics, so I guess it's more difficult to judge modern authors.

Even the classics could use a little critique now and then. For example, "Moll Flanders" is inferior to the similar but vastly superior Fanny Hill.

And OP set the topic as popular -or- well-respected, making a distinction between the two. So either is fine.

Fanny Hill

Hahaha, that novel was pure hilarity.

The recently published The Observations is a worthy successor.

Tell me more. It's relevant.

Fucking Eragon. And Eldest.

Oh yes, The Observations was wonderful.

Witty AND buxom maid starts working for some lady to escape from her past and weird stuff starts happening and you think OH NO IT'S THIS JANE EYRE SHIT ALL OVER AGAIN but instead of going for the squire's John Thomas she instead decides that a mistress is fine too and then the mistress starts going all crazy about conspiracy theories and PEOPLE LIKE YOU DON'T DESERVE TO LIVE.

Then Plot Twist.

It was an absolutely riot from cover to cover.

Awesome summary. I'm convinced.

King have made some crappy books as of lately.

Well known does not mean good.

The DaVinci Code is pure garbage, but so is every other book by Brown.  The man can't write for shit, but he sure knows how to pick controversial subjects and then market the crap out of them.

i wasnt so fond of endymion by dan simmons after reading hyperion but meh it wasnt so bad really

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-24 1:17

those are both pure gold compared to the shite that is olympos, sequel to Ilium. apparently they have both been optioned as movies by a studio but take it with a grain of salt as movie studios seem to be buying the rights to everything.

Moll Flanders has its flaws, but I think it's a bit excessive to call it "crappy," no?  I found Moll an interesting character, especially for her ability to use reasoning to justify her actions and the divided qualities of her conscience.  Also, I think it's an important book in terms of its relation to the prominent social philosophers of the time (Hobbes and Locke).  Anyhow, that's just my two cents.

Signed. Some of his early shit was brilliant. The Stand was probably his best, until the last 200 pages or so, when it just started wandering. The Dark Tower is great until Wizard and Glass-Song of Susannah officially enters "suck" territory. King becomes a character in his own fucking novel. I think that truck blasted the writing skill out of him.

im yet to read olympos or ilium but im wondering why hyperion wasnt considered since that could be made into a very very good movie with the right people O_o

15 back. I seriously doubt if any of the ideas and
plot would be liked by American audiences.
         movies are about money :p

Beasts by John Crowley also dissapointed me. Everything else he's written has been solid stuff.

Tom Clancy, Steven King

Both have their share of good paperweights (literally)

Don't change these.
