i cannot remember the name of this book and its bugging me,
a man lives in an appartment building that is scheduled for demolition,
most people have moved out apart from a man (possibly a writer, or a painter... i forget) and a woman who likes coffee.
In the middle of the night or somesuch, there is some commotion in the general store across the street.
When they all meet to discuss it, the man brings up the subject of nightmares he's been having and a strange "whooshing" noise in his appartment - like the sound of a golf club being swung.
I seem to remember that this sound was not a golf club but from loudspeakers placed in the room below him or something, and that there was someone trying to freak him out by playing these noises on tape.
I also seem to remember something about him being very special, and that the sound was a recording of a mystical sword or something.
My memory is _VERY_ sketchy about these last two facts tho...
