Most of it's not true... And if it IS true, then shockingly, it's irrelevent.

Agree. If only because I read it going, "Okay, any time you want to surprise me with shit I DON'T know..." Seriously, I've been into the subject matter at hand since I read Holy Blood, Holy Grail back in '91. No surprises.

I actually read "HB,HG" last year, before I read the Da Vinci Code . Although I had heard of the latter, I had not heard of the former and was not aware it had anything to do with the Da Vinci Code.
DVC is essentially HBHG lite. Although its writing is usually very dry and scholarly, I was impressed with HBHG. They work very hard to make their arguement as solid and plausible as it possibly can. And there are quite a few zOMG moments in the book. Personally, the part that sticks in my mind is the bit about Masada, that one of the Zealots who committed suicide allegedly left a note claiming to be an 80 year old Jesus.
When you take away the Priory of Zion and the Holy Grail, DVC becomes just another bad installment of generic popular fiction. The plotting is bland and predictable, and the writing is, as I saw in one book review, "on a Dick-and-Jane level".
