Books featuring prostitutes?

Hey world4ch, I'm looking for suggestions of books featuring prostitutes as protagonists or prominant characters. I'm not looking for erotica; I was hoping for something that focuses more on the life experiences (emotional or otherwise) that people who sell sex must go through.

Examples would be Memoirs of a Geisha (understandably not about a prostitute) or Kushiel's Dart (closer to what I'm looking for, but it dealt more with politics and less with sex). Any suggestions? :)

Not a book, but you should see "What Alice Found"
http://imdb.com/title/tt0343172/

It embodies everything that you seek, and it's beautiful. I had trouble understanding what you meant and why you would be interested before I thought of this movie.

Fanny by Erica Jong, if you're looking for a historical standpoint. Written in the 18th century style, it's a damned fine period piece about being a woman having to live by your wits.

Geisha, a Life
by Mineko Iwasaki or something

but geisha aren't close to prostitutes!  maybe you're interested in books about women's journeys that aren't so feminine that you'd be criticized as gay for reading.  I don't want to read some sappy love story about a couple living on the prairie, but if it's about a potential slut, I'm interested!

Actually, I'm not looking for books dealing with women specifically at all. Hell, books about guy-whores would be better, in my opinion. :D

I suppose you could say I'm looking for things dealing with the taboo of prostitution in general, social taboos, how people deal emotionally with selling access to their bodies, etc. A book about an emotional/romantic relationship with a prostitute would be awsome. Stuff like that.

madame bovary was not a slut! she was just a disillusioned housewife. you'd have done the same in her place..
