the gundam novel was written before, during, and after the original series and the trilogy was written, but it was pretty fucking different.

The GitS:SAC prose novels were pretty good. I ordered the Rurouni Kenshin novel a few days ago so I'll get back to you on that.
Does Anon recommend any more anime prose novels?

-Kino's Journey (though the books retain the title of "Kino no Tabi")
-While not in English book form, the many novels of Haruhi are been translated online.
-Slightly off the topic, "Musashi" by Eiji Yoshikawa is what the manga "Vagabond" is based off of.
-Also, Haruki Murakami's books "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" and "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" provided inspiration for ABe when doing Haibane Renmei. To be more precise, certain aspect of the show come more or less directly from the books.

I hear the Kouga Ninja scrolls started the whole "ninjas beating the crap out of each other" thing, but I don't know if that's entirely true or not.

I like the Vampire Hunter D books. Even if they are kind of poorly written, the world in which they're set makes up for it.
But I also think the way in which they're written is partially because it's translated from a language very different from English, which was something I noticed with Battle Royale.
Also, if anyone's ever read the Broken Sky series (some young adult books that were actually pretty decent from back in the day), those apparently drew a lot of inspiration from Anime.

Trinity Blood. The author sorta died before he finished all of the books.

An understatement. I've never read such utter crap. Even Dan Brown's prose is better.
I hope that the VHD books are poor translations, because otherwise they're saying something very sad about Japan's ability to read.

I actually really liked the Broken Sky series. They were one of my fond memories from childhood. :D

Battle Royal had a manga based on it. And it sucked.

Anyone have an opinion on the Shakugan no Shana light novels?
