Candide is good for a short read that you can actually understand, and it has some vicious satire.
I like Dostoevsky cos I'm emo like that. It doesn't require an immense historical background to appreciate his books, either.
try a newer nonfiction book. Harvard Design School Guide to Shopping is filled with essays.
Clockwork orange is a short read too, and all the slang can be gathered from context.
I don't like contemporary fiction-can ya tell?
