Terry Pratchett's Discworld

Name: !EBHsswvZUM 2004-12-28 1:03

I just finished reading Monstrous Regiment for the second time, and am eagerly awaiting a paperback release of Going Postal.  I'm cheap, sue me.

I love the way Pratchett writes.  Some of the Discworld analogies he creates are so hilariously apt.  He gets bonus points for being literate enough in internet and video game culture to make fun of them properly and subtly.

Also: Guards > Death > Wizards > Witches.  Discuss.

^^ Thanks for the spoiler, thats the only book I hadn't gotten around to reading yet :(

Spoilery-goodness aside... Yes! I love Pratchett's Disworld series. It's mostly good fun and it does have a good knack for parody-ing similar situations in real life.

Btw he co-authored a book with Neil Gaiman (of Sandman fame) titled "Good Omens". While the plot smacks of Gaiman, the actual writing is most definately Pratchett, which makes it an enjoyable read.

For me, Death edges out Guards by a hair. Vimes is a great character, but I just like how metaphysical Death stories can become. It might also be tied to the fact that I enjoyed Thief of Time so much, it tied with Small Gods as my favorite of the Discworld series. And, yes, Good Omens was a lot of fun to read. And though I do like Thief of Time's depiction of similar characters better, Crowley is really cool.

So tell me, is there any reccomended reading order for Discworld?  Where should I start?  Where should I finish?  What's essential?

Start with Colour of Magic

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-01 18:32

Oh fie.  I just started reading the Discworld series with 'The Last Continent'.  Oh well.  Seems amusing enough.

I read The Fifth Elephant and it was very boring.

It doesn't really matter where you start. Very little of the plot or jokes rely on previous understanding of the universe. And if they do, Terry explains it well enough at the time.

Oh, and Pyramids++.

I liked Interesting Times.

"McSweeneys?"
"Very old, respected family."

Of all the continueing arcs, I like the Guards the best and Rincewind the least, though my absolute favorite Discworld book would be the standalone "Pyramids". I would start reading either with a one-shot or Guards Guards. I would not start with Color of Magic, because:

a. It's a boring arc, and
b. It's his first book and not that good

I love the Last Hero standalone novella, personally. I've got the big illustrated version here. Such goodness on glossy paper is hard to find.

Hot damn, I just realised Science of Discworld III is going to be released this month. Please excuse me while I jump around and shout "Yay!" at the top of my lungs.

It's the M-word you shouldn't use with the Librarian. (Orangutans are apes). Stop giving fatal advice to posters ;-)

Bloody Stupid Johnson is the best litterary concept ever created.

Don't forget the illiterate revolutionary.
"Forward Motion With the Masses!"
"Tuppence A Bucket, Well Stamped Down!"
"Rise Up For Moderately Better Life!"
"How's Your Granny Off For Soap?"

I have to admit being vaguely unsatisfied with Thud!. It was a great concept, but the book was probably half the length it should have been. The whole possession thing was dealt with much better in A Hat Full of Sky.

On a seperate note, I just bought the Discworld Playstation game at EB games not but two weeks ago for three dollars.

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-29 13:30

I recommend you start with the Colour of Magic, read up to Men At Arms and then stop. Pretty much all the books after that are shit.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-09 4:15

Um all the books fucking own  , Carpe jugulum , night watch , feet of clay = all good.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-09 4:18

Actually I misread >>22 , ill agree some of them do suck (3rd elephant or whatever?)

But the majority of them are indeed good.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-10 12:57

The Fifth Elephant is more serious, but I liked it.

Thud! and Night Watch were definitely too serious, though.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-12 1:49

All the books around the watch own , especially the one where he goes back in time :| (sam) and it introduces carrot

Name: Anonymous 2006-01-15 0:05

Last Continent my favorites. Wizards Tie with the Gaurds for me. Death takes a slim backseat, unless he's on the Death Cycle, in which case, he pwns all (xcept for Luggage, duh.).  Props for Twoflower

Name: Anonymous 2006-01-18 11:25 (sage)

The discworld game was good. go play that.

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-02 20:56

i really liked the colour of magic and a light fantastic and read them back to back but i find a really difficult time getting into equal rites

it feels like he ditched the structure of the first two and pushed far too many things together

i hope the rest of his books arent the same way

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-04 11:58

way to bump a thread almost 3 years after the last post

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-17 13:38

Bump lol

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-17 14:17

Why do people even like the discworld series I never could get into it.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-17 22:16
