I like his shading, but there's just something about his timing that bugs me. When I see his work, I tend to think, "Dammit, just move already!". Other Kanada-style animators like Yoshimichi Kameda don't seem to have this problem for some reason. Movements are far from smooth, but they aren't ridiculously stiff at the same time.

But it does move, just check out his Shin Sekai Yori stuff. It's not a slideshow.

Kanada's animation is extremely exaggerated in timing and spacing.
Arasan's trying to do the same thing but sometimes it's not good enough and it looks fucking annoying instead of interesting.

I don't think his work is slideshow-like at all. I am curious about his SSY cut though, and I'm looking forward to it.
yeah it does move, but not often enough and his animation is just very stiff in general. It gives the impression of a slideshow. Like the SSY segment, the part where the dude jumps to stab another guy and we see him slash the sword but very slowly and without much volume to it. Imagine if Imaishi did it, yeah it'd look similar but he'd make that sword swing look CRAZY and FAST and INSANE. I don't get that feeling when watching Arai's stuff. This is odd though since most Kanada style animators really work towards creating their own sense of physics. Arai is good at shading, decent at FX but lacking in everything else. I remember liking his Star Driver bits but most of time I just find his cuts rather tedious to watch
I just started watching Birdy Decode and it's actually rather well animated. It's quite interesting to compare Shingo Yamashita's Bridy ED to what he did in SSY.
