Well the skateboard stuff is obviously referenced from film. For example the fish eye lens stuff. Skate films are filled with fish eye shots not just because the look but they are used on small cameras to the reduce shaking and the tracking shot looks exactly like it's taken from such a film clip.

But I don't see those comments anywhere.

It was a flop like every other animated film without brand recognition. People without an interest in animation will never watch animated movies unless they have some reason to think it's good beforehand i.e.they know it's from Pixar, Miyazaki etc.
