Postapocalypse or apocalypse in anime

I have reasons to believe that Casshern was the first animu to venture an apocalyptic setting. I've checked wikipedia, mal and all those other shitty anime listing sites. If you have any objections and believe there's any anime before it that ventured post apocalyptic/apocalpytic scenarios speak up. If not I'm wondering why didn't it get more praise? A decent toku movie, 2 remakes, one being extremely bad, and another being a reboot with almost nothing in common doesn't feel like appreciation. What does an anime have to do to receive appreciation? Sell Iron Man numbers or what?
