Off to watching, OP out!

Well this turned out better than I was expecting.

Slice of life is by far my favorite type of show but it normally only seems to work if it is largely comedy based.  When I heard there was going to be drama I thought "oh no, this is going to be Hourou Musuko all over again".  The drama in Hourou Musuko felt forced as if it was there to advance the plot, it did not feel like something genuine that would arise from the characters personalities, and in slice of life the characters personalities are everything to the show.

Hana-Saku seems to have avoided this pitfall.  The drama that was created seemed like something that would naturally arise from the coming together of these different people.  It has only been one episode so I am still worried that this may not stay true.

I heard that this show will be 26 episodes and I am not sure if that is a good thing or not yet.  It will give plenty of time to develop the characters but I fear it could lead to lots of pointless drama.

Let's just hope for the best, bro. I think it has a lot of potential with the awesome characters with believable persoonalities, and I think there will be scenery porn at the very least. It's an anime sponsored by a prefectural (IIRC) government to boost tourism after all. They need all the beauty they can get.

On the other hand it might be bad because of it trying to fit so many places they want to promote they will make pointless plot just to make it there.

And although it is kinda tired already, I always love coming of age story. Something I would never experience ;_;.

OP here.

Oh my god, that was a perfect first episode.

I wonder how fast time will pass in the show?  Will the 24 episodes only cover a few months or will it cover two years until she goes away to college.  I am hoping for the latter I think it would be more interesting.

I can see it coming. The tears will be flowing when Ohana's grandmother finally makes some kind of gesture that she accepts her granddaughter.

I really like Ohana as a character so far. Her reactions throughout Ep1 seemed very realistic for a 16yo girl without being condescending or misogynistic.

Major points for asking for the slap and saying "Thank you sir may I have another!" afterwards.

As for not having a good work ethic -- of course she hasn't. She lived in the city her entire time so far, and hasn't had a job yet. They can't expect her to have a perfect work ethic out of nowhere, especially when she never expected to be working at her Grandma's anyways.

The good thing about the first ep of this show is it showed us the possible hurdles that Ohana will face throughout the series. It also gave us a bit of an introduction to most of the characters in the show and gave us a glimpse of their reception towards Ohana al though its a bit vague.

24 episodes? I believe that this would be pushing the limits but it would all depend on how they will dictate the pace of the story.

Its still to early to tell but I can say that this show will be redefining the "coming of age" story in animes. Its not like the usual "coming of age" stories that I've watched before.

I have high hopes for PA works on this one. I love the way they market a show based on its story and content rather than using overboard, unnecessary, blatant FANSERVICE that most shows aired in the past few seasons suffers from. I know PA isn't a "fanservice free" studio but they never did any fanservice filled show with unnecessary panty shots, boob shots being shown every few minutes.

The art is pretty, but that's pretty much all I like so far The anime is pretty boring, and I already hate every single character.

I actually was expecting this whole thing to be a moe slice-of-life whatever. And then Ohana got bitch-slapped in the first episode, and I knew I was in love. I really the characters, and the art is wonderful. While there is obviously a little fanservice, it's at a minimum, and it doesn't take away from the wholeness of the show. It's one of my favorites. of the season already.

(Also, Kanae Itou is much love.)
