そうは言ったものの、ここはティナのテントだ。彼女のほうをちらりと伺ったが、
別段拒絶の意志は見せていない。それどころか、

「文明の果て、アフリカへようこそお客人。なにか飲み物は？」
などと気の利いたことを言う。

「それじゃあ、お言葉に甘えて。コーヒーをお願いするわ」

「了解だ。マティルダ」
マティルダは、ティナが声をかけるよりも早くコーヒーの準備を始めていた。

「それで、なんの用？」
面倒ごとじゃなければいいのだけど、と言う思いが声にでないように聞く。

「4年ぶりの再開なのにそっけないわね」
智子が返す。

「そんな年でもないでしょ。女学生じゃあるまいし」
「まあ、そりゃそうだけど」

智子は入れ立てのコーヒーを一口すすると、マティルダに軽くウィンクし、本題を切り出した。

「今さらとは思うけど、扶桑海事変のことを本にするらしくって。それで、あのときの陸軍エースが
感動の再会！なんてのをやりたいとか」
「はあ･･･」
「乗ってこないわね。そりゃ気持ちはわかるけど」
「よしてよ、あの時のことはもう気にしてないんだから」

ティナのほうをちらりと伺うと、身を乗り出してこちらの話に興味津々と言った風だ。
なるほど、智子に親切なのはこういうことね･･･

「取材の連中は後日改めて来るから心配しないで。今日は私だけよ」
「武子と綾香は？」
「二人とも今の任地を離れられないって。今動けるのは私だけだから、まずは圭子のとこにね。
　上は四人一緒の画を欲しがってたみたいだけど」
「なるほどね」

ここでたまらず、ティナが口を挟む。
「アナブキ中尉は、ケイの同僚だったんだろう」
「ええ」
「それで、フソウのエースだ」
「ええ」

「強いのか？」
やれやれ、あとから私に聞けばいいのに、ティナは智子本人にずばりと聞く。

「強いわよ」
智子はさらりと返す。ティナは、智子のことを気に入り始めているようだった。

「でも、そういうのはあまり気にしなくなっちゃったかも」
そう言って微笑んだ智子には、かつての無鉄砲なまでの勢い、気負いを感じない。
悪い意味ではなく、大人になったな、という感じ。

「ずいぶん落ち着いたみたいね、智子」
「そりゃもう、スオムスでいろいろ揉まれたから」
「へええ、武子の荒療治は効果覿面だったみたいね」

そう言った途端、智子がずいっ、と身を乗り出してくる。

「何よ、知ってたの？」
「武子が見舞いに来た時に相談されたわ。智子に教えてあげたかったけど、あいにく
私はベッドに縛り付けられてたから」

くっくっ、と笑いをかみ殺しながら答える。

「そういう圭子は、この何年かどうしてたのよ」
おっと、雲行きが怪しくなってきた。ティナはこの空気をハンターの本能で嗅ぎつけたのか、
マティルダにコーヒーのおかわりを入れさせている。智子をすぐに返すつもりはないみたい。まったくもう。

Yeah it was cheesy, especially the ending, but I'm not going for something super original here (not saying I won't try) I think the story will end up using plenty of cliches and obvious allusions, but I plan on making them tasteful...most of the time. You can also expect plenty of famous/silly one liners (Eila saying "criminal scum") and the such.
