And you can't deny that hunger has been turned into a tradition in Finland, a tradition the rich have made the poor believe is sacred. Our army has gone into battle half-dead with hunger for six or seven hundred years, always with a bare behind showing through its rags. First it was the Swedes we had to make history for, and now it's our gentry's turn. Rich old men and women need something to shed a few tears over, so they're glad there are poor people they can help to show their own goodness That's the way it would be with us too-if we had bread and decent clothes, where would the heroism be?
