My brother's poor taste in anime

Name: peter 2010-06-10 12:35

Hello. my brother is 13 and he loves naruto and wont be convinced that it is not a good show. I started him on anime way back when toonami came on with dragonball Z and he loved it. now he likes naruto and bleach. i'm trying to introduce him to popular anime movies from the nineties like akira and Ghost in the shell. What can i do to help his taste in anime evolve from that shit...

Well somebody has to watch that shit.  Might as well just let him keep enjoying it.

He's only 13, let him have his Naruto for now, we all watched it when we were kids too. Sure the first 100 chapters were better than the crap that's being published now, but I'm sure his tastes will open up as he grows.

There is no way you will get a regular 13 year old to like Ghost in the Shell. Just let him watch his shonen, he'll move on to other stuff once he gets older. We all watched shit like that when we were young.

He will grow out of it, everyone make mistake when we were young.

Try to make him watch Black Lagoon, any Gundam except wing and destiny, Baccano, Dennou Coil, Hellsing, Gunbuster and Diebuster, and FMP. I don't think a 13-year-old would have a problem with these; the action would probably keep him entertained. Just don't show him any slice of life shows or trashy fanservice ecchi shit.

Good job man, you turned your brother into an idiot.

This is what you get for showing a child DBZ.

>DBZ
Bad start. I guess you have to use Pokemon/Sailor Moon/NGE

Yes, I agree with the others above in that a 13 year old boy is too emotionally unstable and childish to understand our moe.  Let his ferment.  He will eventually age out of watching what everyone else watches.  If you are searching for immediate results, ease him into whatever genre you are interested in.  Clearly you enjoy some of the classics, and these are not easy to turn down at any age.  However, your choices are a bit loldeep and require much intellectual capacity.  As your brother's braincells have already been nuked by all his shonen, begin with some of the more acceptable classics, like any Miyazaki film (well, maybe start with Totoro for some nostalgia impact, then work your way up to Grave of the Fireflies) once you reach this point, you may be able to introduce him to Akira or another film of equal credibility.  Repeat until you see results.

Trust me, this method works.  I am actually weaning one of my friends into the moe genre so we can have sugoi orgies of kawaii love.

miyazaki shit and grave of the fireflies are fucking boring.  no action at all.  whats wrong with dbz... it has one of the better stories ive seen.

You need to understand his tastes and use it against him. Try showing him anime about kids at his age, like dennou coil (he won't understand shit out of it), or TTGL (simon etc.). Try some other fighting anime with an actual plot, not "lol fightan".
