the manga ending was no surprise, the anime just stopped

Incredible, it ended??  Unfortunately it took so long (and apparently the anime didn't continue) that some of us grew out of that phase where we could stand long series.  It holds a special place in my heart but a nostalgic one.  I could never go in and finish it.  It lives in a certain time in my life, not the better part of a decade.
